  1. Hi Dr,

I had chickenpox before and that was many many years back. After several years from chickenpox recovery, the virus reactivated and i got shingles. After which, there is no sign of any shingles or blisters.
So now the question is, if i want to test for hsv 1 & 2, expecially via blood sample, will it show positive ?
Since the virus is dormant in the body, is there any possibilty that it could spread to others via skin to skin contact?

    • HSV is herpes simplex virus, while shingles is caused by a reactivation of VZV, or varicella zoster virus. There is no real relationship between the two infections.

  2. I had an encounter with a sex worker 1 days ago. I received oral sex from her and she ended it with masturbation. We also did some light kissing and no frenching.

I have no symptoms currently (maybe too early to tell) but am worried and is considering to get tested for HIV and STD.

    1. What is your risk assessment of my current situation?
    2. What is the risk of contracting HIV/STD through kissing?
    3. When should I get tested?

    Thank you.

    • Your exposure would pose a risk for certain STDs, especially urinary infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, and also possible infection with herpes and syphilis (from skin-to-skin contact). The risk of HIV would be negligible. If you are concerned, best to visit us for a proper consult and evaluation.

  3. Hi doc,

May I know what is the difference between the following tests?

Herpes Simplex Virus PCR Herpes Simplex Virus Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Test $ 200.00

Herpes Simplex Virus Type I IgG Antibody Herpes Type 1 $ 40.00
Herpes Simplex Virus Type II IgG Antibody Herpes Type 2 $ 40.00

    • The Antibody tests look for proteins in your blood which and produced by your own body in response to the herpes virus. These can take between 1-3 months to be detectable in the blood tests. The PCR test is a direct swab from a lesion (skin or mucous membrane) that looks for presence of herpes virus – it will only detect if the virus is shedding from the lesion, but will not tell you if you have had a previous/recent infection if it is negative.

  4. Raymond

I received a oral sex from an unknown lady. She used a piece of ‘plastic sheet’ to cover my penis before the deed.

Is the sheet a dental dam?
Is this covered safe oral sex or unprotected?
Is the sheet effective in prevention infection?

If I want to get tested, how long should I wait before going to the clinic and what test is appropriate?

    • It is impossible for me to know whether this sheet was a dental dam or not. What we can say is that dental dams are only indicated for use during cunnilingus, i.e. mouth to vagina. It is not indicated for use as protection during fellatio, i.e. mouth to penis. If you are concerned about infection, please visit our clinics for a proper consultation and testing. Conclusive testing can be performed at one month post-exposure.

  5. Mrseang

I’ve recently experienced pain during urination and the bottom of the head of my penis is pain when I touch it. I’ve got three open sores around my groin area not sure due to shaving or my sexual exposures recently but it’s healing. And I had high fever for one or two days. I’ll like to ask what do you think I’ve gotten ?

    • We cannot make any true diagnosis over the internet, but in general open sores can be caused by herpes simplex virus, syphilis, chancroid, and other bacterial infections. Pain during urination may indicate urethritis, which can be caused by chlamydia, gonorrhea, ureaplasma, mycoplasma, etc. as just a few potentially sexually transmitted diseases. Please visit us for a proper evaluation and treatment.

  6. Hi Doctor

I got a blowjob with condom and have been worried. Is it safe or should I be worried?

  7. what’s the cost for testing chlamydia as it is not stated above.

  8. Hi Dr,

I would like to know where can I test for EBV/CMV/Mononucleosis and the price of these tests if your clinic performs them. I’ve done a gen4 HIV test on the 16 days post exposure which came back negative and plan to do another test on the 28 days post exposure. I would also like to do the above test and I’m experiencing symptoms like persistent tension headache, swollen lymph nodes at my neck and groin area, nausea, fatigue and sore throat. I’m currently on the 3rd week post exposure. Thank you.

  9. Hi, I want to know the price for testing Cadida and Gardnerella Vaginalis at your clinic?

  10. Hi Dr
If I bring my gf over for testing will we be able to separated or attend together?

And sorry to ask but what do we mean by exposure ? Isit the time we have sex or the time we have symptoms?

I’m freaking out as I have the discharge symptoms . Pain while urinate.

    • You can be seen either separately or together in the consult room – it is up to you. You will both need to register under separate accounts if you both require testing/treatment. Your symptoms sound suggestive of urethritis, and I would certainly recommend you come down for an evaluation. You may find out clinics here.

      • Thanks I’m currently oversea and will be back tomorrow isit right to say that for anonymous testing we have to go to Robinson walk right?

When I touch the tip I will feel a sharp pain.
My discharge is white and I start to have some burning sensation.

  11. I have go thru the HIV test and STD test on 14 days of oral sex exposure. Both result was negative.

But,i still encounter itchy on my testicles and needle pain at urethra.

Can i know what is the cause?and is my test done on 14 days are clear? Am i suppose to do another round of HIV test?

  12. I wish to take a specific Male Urethritis, 280 shown above. How long will it take for the results to be out?

    • Sure, the results will take about 3-5 working days. Please visit us tomorrow morning for a consult and evaluation.

      • Dr. Jon, I truly appreciate your response. Please bear with me and do help me to answer some of the questions I’ve. As I’m working overseas, I will need to make some arrangements first to go back. Thank you in advance.

Two month ago, After 1 round of unprotected sex with a working girl, I had burning sensation when passing my urine. I consulted a gp and I had a normal urine test, I didn’t disclose the risk to him. After the test, he simply said it normal UTI and gave me an antibiotic, which I took and everything was normal again. I did ask him if the urine test will reveal a sti like gnorrhea and he said it won’t. He said I probably over worry. Does, the effective treatment of the burning sensation means anything? Is it true a normal urine test doesn’t reveal gnorrhea? He just said my test looks normal except that the urine is “dirty” Grateful for your opinion doc..

        • Regular urine testing will not normally detect STDs such chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, etc. It sounds like the GP just performed a dipstick test to look for any WBCs, RBCs, etc. in the urine. Furthermore, it is extremely uncommon for young, generally fit healthy males to even contract normal UTI’s, unless you have an anatomical issue from childhood. The fact that the burning sensation has improved may be a good sign, but it really depends what antibiotics you took – also, a large majority of chlamydia and ureaplasma may not have any symptoms at all. Best to do proper testing when you are back in Singapore.

          • Hey doc, I don’t want to be a free loader here. Is there a way that I can just have a phone consultation and I can pay the norm price, it will definitely help me a lot. If you can email me to arrange, I will be most glad. By the way, It was a full urine test, not the swipe type. I would like to share the results and the antibiotics I’ve taken, and listen to your opinion.

  13. I am not at risk group but want to have blood test to confirm no HIV and any STD.

May I check how much will it cost please.

    Thank you.

  14. I had an unplanned unprotected sex last 16 June, I’m afraid I’ll get HIV or Hepatitis. What tests should I go for?

    • Hi, you may come down to our clinics for consultation and testing. We would advise a window period for HIV and hepatitis testing of at least one month post-exposure for more conclusive results.

  15. Hi Doctor,

I had an encounter with a sex worker 2 days ago. We had protected oral and penetrative sex with condom. We also did kissing/frenching. I have no symptoms currently (maybe too early to tell) but am worried and is considering to get tested for HIV and STD.

    1. What is your risk assessment of my current situation?
    2. What is the risk of contracting HIV/STD through kissing/frenching?
    3. When should I get tested?

    Thank you.

    • You will not get any STD through kissing, except perhaps oral herpes. HIV risk is low if the condom was used properly. You can get tested for infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea with urine tests after 1-2 weeks, and HIV as early as 2 weeks but preferably 28 days for conclusive results. Please visit our clinics to consult our doctors for more information.
